I was away for 4 day weekend, a luxury and a privilege if you asked me. Spending the days with my family and celebrating my brother belated birthday, however it was not as exciting as it should be. Both of my nephew and niece were admitted into hospital since 4/3/2015 and were only released on Monday 9/3/2015. According to the doctors, both of them are showing symptoms of heat stroke.

Being children who are very active both of them like to play outside and the brother was involved in soccer competition. Exposure to the sun and hot weather/temperature accelerate the symptoms. We are experiencing such unpredictable weather condition lately. The temperature is increasing day by day and sometimes it is raining heavily (usually in the evening). Young children are more vulnerable to heat stroke especially if there are lacked of adult supervision. So here are some heat stroke symptoms as your reference:

1. Throbbing headache
2. Dizziness and light-headedness
3. Lack of sweating despite the heat
4. Red, hot, and dry skin
5. Muscle weakness or cramps
6. Nausea and vomiting
7. Rapid heartbeat, which may be either strong or weak
8. Rapid, shallow breathing
9. Behavioral changes such as confusion, disorientation, or staggering
10. Seizures
11.Unconsciousness

My nephew and niece showed symptoms number 1,2,4,6 and 8. After noticing all these, my sister rushed them to the hospital and they were treated immediately.

Preventing Heat Stroke
If you must go outdoors, you can prevent heat stroke by taking these steps:

1.    Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, and a wide-brimmed hat.
2.    Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or more.
3.    Drink extra fluids. To prevent dehydration, it's generally recommended to drink at least eight glasses of water, fruit juice, or vegetable juice per day.
4.    Take additional precautions when exercising or working outdoors.
5.    Reschedule or cancel outdoor activity. If possible, shift your time outdoors to the coolest times of the day, either early morning or after sunset.

Dear readers, please pay attention to your daily activities and take care of yourself. Getting sick is never fun so if we can understand the illnesses we can help to prevent them.
