I’m not a brave person. Yet I enjoy reading horror novels and I also enjoy watching horror movies. It’s not for adrenalin (because I know some people enjoy horror materials for a good scare so they can scream out their frustration or something) but the story line actually. I want to know why people started to die in the first place or why the ghost became ghost or can they find peace in the end. This curiosity makes me read or watch horror stories/movies right until the end.
Out of many ghost stories, myths or urban legends, in my humble opinion, Japanese wins hands down. There’s something different about the ghosts being retold in the movies that make them different than any ghost from Western culture. Here allow me to introduce you one ghost or urban legend if you prefer from Japan.
Name: Hanako-san.
-She’s a young girl that haunts school restrooms. For decades the stories of Hanako-san (Toire no Hanako-san-Hanako of the toilet) have been passed from one generation to the next. According to the urban legend she is usually found at the third stall in the third floor of the girls' restroom. She also usually described as wearing red skirt and having bobbed hair.
Hanako stays in her stall until some adventurous students (hey..that’s how every ghost story started isn’t it?) knock on her door and ask some questions. In some documentation on Hanako-san it is believed that those students conjure her by asking “Are you there, Hanako-san?” and if they open the door they will be pulled inside.
For more information you can read about Hanako-san here.
